Alex Calinescu
‘Out of Darkness’
12– 23 April 2023
Alex Calinescu studied painting at the City and Guilds of London Art School (1986-89) as an undergraduate and, subsequently, as a postgraduate at the Royal Academy of Art, London (1989-92). After leaving the Royal Academy Schools, she continued to live and work in London.
In 2021, and after many years of longing to live and work by the sea, Calinescu purchased an old Victorian school in Margate in which to create her new studio and home. Having spent the last 36 years in London, this is a monumental move, and a time of new beginnings.
Before leaving her London studio, Calinescu will be holding an exhibition showing a selection of work made during the 25 years she has spent working in Deptford. This will be a unique opportunity to view previously unseen canvases created during this period alongside drawings, carved panels and monoprints, and will include pieces made whilst Artist in Residence at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in Connecticut in 2006.
‘Out of Darkness’ will run from 12-23 April 2023
